Gilmour Space Technologies, a company operating from the Gold Coast, is set to create a record after the federal agencies grant it an orbital launch permit, the first of its kind in Australia. This signifies that the company has also been allowed to carry out the launch of its local Eris rocket from Bowen Orbital Spaceport based in Queensland, a great achievement for the country’s growing space industry. Gilmour Space will be the first to launch a rocket manufactured in Australia from Australian territory by obtaining a permit from the Australian Space Agency and the federal government.
Adam Gilmour, the chief executive officer and co-founder, disclosed that he regarded the approval as a turning point for the firm and the entire industry in the country. “This green light will allow us to assist the first attempt of orbital test flight of an Australian-made rocket,” Gilmour said without forgetting that the team is looking at the permit conditions and that the launch date for Eris TestFlight1 will be communicated soon.
Now Gilmour Space is ready for taking the final steps in preparation for launch as it has already reached one of the essential milestones, which is carrying out an extensive wet dress rehearsal of the Eris rocket, during which they counted down to T-10 seconds. It will be the first launch from a series of test flights which will aim to place an orbit using the company’s advanced propulsion system.
The orbital launch permit which comes off the back of another significant milestone in Gilmour space history in which the Federal Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic awarded Gilmour Space with the first ever orbital launch facility in Australia for the Bowen Spaceport this year. In July 2018 construction of the Oberon launch complex California began. Highways and transport to the launch complex were constructed. Under the Space (Launches & Returns) Act 2018, launches that entail the use of space objects which would exceed altitude of one hundred kilometers must obtain an official permit. Gilmour Space is required to additionally give a thirty (30) day notice of their launch prior to the actual launch.
Established in 2015, Gilmour Space has expanded operational capabilities tremendously as their workforce is now about two hundred and fifty Australians and constructed strong local supply chain comprising of over three hundred Australian firms. The activities of the company have received support from considerable private capital, which includes $55 million round of Series D where the major participant was the Queensland Investment Corporation.
Bowen Spaceport, which will be one of the main launch sites for Gilmour Space, is one of the rare private orbital launch sites anywhere in the world. It will allow access to low and mid inclination orbits thus further enhancing Australia’s quest in the international space race. Browning Regional Council Mayor Ry Collins said the space industry will be of great importance in regional markets and added that the operationalization of the Bowen spaceport is a great opportunity for the region. Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tat also pointed out the job creation and innovation that Gilmour Space brought to the area. “This homegrown company creates leverage for the next generation of Gold Coast leaders,” said Tate. For Gilmour Space’s
landmark accomplishment is not all there is to Australian space industry evolution, and it positions the country into the already active global space economy.
