Amid ongoing labor strikes in Hollywood, “Dune: Part Two” has been rescheduled from its 2023 release date to March 15, 2024. This decision comes as Warner Bros. Discovery and Legendary Entertainment adapt to the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes, which hinder the ability of actors to promote films made by studios within the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
The reshuffling of release dates also affects other films, such as “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” which is now slated for April 12, 2024, and the animated film “Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” moved to December 13, 2024.
The delay of “Dune: Part Two” is seen as a strategy to avoid releasing the film without proper promotional efforts due to the labor strikes. The movie features a star-studded ensemble, including Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, Florence Pugh, and Austin Butler, who collectively hold significant social media influence. Postponing the film allows time for negotiations to conclude and for actors to actively promote the film, which is expected to attract both older fans of the book and younger audiences.
The first installment of “Dune” achieved success at the box office during the pandemic, even with a simultaneous release on streaming service HBO Max. The sequel is anticipated to surpass the previous film’s global box office earnings of nearly $400 million, particularly as pandemic restrictions on theaters have been lifted. With its delay, “Dune: Part Two” aims to ensure a stronger box office performance in 2024, potentially benefiting from premium format screens and unique theatrical experiences like IMAX.
