SmartRecruiters Research Reveals AI Adoption in Recruitment Surging among Australians

Australian recruitment involves more AI instruments according to a new survey from SmartRecruiters, where more than 75% of recruiters have used artificial intelligence tools in their talent acquisition strategies. According to the poll conducted in November 2023, AI was seen as a crucial element that could continue making recruitment easier, with more than half of the participants, or 55%, opting for Generative AI as their preferred solution, including the likes of ChatGPT. AI-powered candidate matching tools and AI-based assessments are opted by 21% and 18% of recruiters, respectively.

According to Richard Lewis-Jones, VP Asia Pacific at SmartRecruiters, these findings say a lot about the sensational speed with which AI technology is being adopted in the recruitment industry. “Leading recruitment firms understand the value these tools bring and how they can optimize the entire hiring process,” he said.

It also explored the area of emerging technologies. AI-based sourcing was found to be one the areas of interest for staying competitive, said 52.9% of participants, coming second to skills-based hiring tools currently being explored by 55.9% of recruiters. In terms of existing tools already delivering value, 79% of respondents indicated they rely on Application Tracking Systems (ATS), while 24% noted the effectiveness of AI-powered recruitment tools.

The survey results align with broader industry trends. A report from KPMG earlier this year found that 77% of Australian talent leaders ranked talent acquisition, retention, and reskilling as major challenges, with 61% expecting these issues to persist in the coming years. “As recruitment teams face a talent shortage and increased pressure, technology, particularly AI, is filling a critical gap,” said Lewis-Jones.

Lewis-Jones predicts a further adoption of AI toward 2024, as more companies realize the potential benefits for streamlining operation, improving candidate experience, and strategic hiring goals. When AI matures further, it is poised to touch the recruitment industry profoundly and push talent acquisition practices forward in deeper ways.
